The trade body representing the UK’s recycling and waste industry has joined the NEWEST CCUS project’s expert group of advisers.

The Environmental Services Association (ESA), which has wide experience of the recycling and waste sector, published its Net Zero Strategy in June and has stated its commitment to act as a bridge between industry and government as part of the UK’s net zero transition.

The ESA’s strategy requires its members to invest £10 billion in recycling in the next 10 years and decarbonise residual waste treatment by 2040. The strategy also calls a halt to the purchase of fossil vehicles used by the industry by 2030.

The trade body believes the application of carbon capture on waste-to-energy facilities will be a “critical element” to achieving net zero for the sector.

It is now working with members and other stakeholders to ensure that the right policy and regulations are in place to support the delivery of carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS).

Jacob Hayler, ESA Executive Director, said: “We represent members across the recycling and waste sector and aim to play our part in helping to deliver the UK’s decarbonisation goals. Our participation in the NEWEST CCUS Expert Advisory Group provides the opportunity to integrate the UK Government’s agenda with industry and academic best practice, as exemplified by the NEWEST-CCUS project.”

Alongside other mitigation solutions, CCUS technologies have an important role in supporting decarbonisation efforts across different emitting sectors, including process industries, refineries and waste-to-energy facilities.
